The hills of Negros, in the Philippines, are largely populated by farming villages struggling to survive. For one village, however, things are beginning to look up...
The village of Mambugsay once lived off the production of corn and charcoal. Barely allowing the villagers to earn a decent living, the corn and charcoal also made the land fallow and polluted the air and rivers. Then, the Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation (ADFI) – a nongovernment foundation – came to Mambugsay. Led by Auke Idzenga, an international awardee for sustainable and environmental concerns – the ADFI taught the villagers to plant lemongrass for lemongrass oil. ADFI helped the villagers set up a cooperative, built a distiller, introduced organic farming methods, and helped market the oil both here and abroad. Today, the Mambugsay families that switched to lemongrass make at least two times what they used to earn from corn and charcoal. Analita De la Cruz, treasurer of the The Mambugsay Essential Oil Producers Organization, said, “Lemongrass planting has been very helpful to improving our lives. I have tripled my monthly income from selling lemongrass essential oils.“ While the community continues to be very poor, the ADFI continues to improving the village’s distilling and organic farming equipment, and convincing more families to switch to lemongrass, knowing that the more farmers plant lemongrass, the better the chance of improving the life of the community
Instead of relying on imported carrier oils, AMU’IN – in its task to help local communities --uses Mambugsay lemongrass oil as a carrier oil for many of its products.
